As the Spring Festival travel rush begins, another journey unfolds behind the scenes. Essential supplies—coal, ores, fertilizers, and grain—are moving across the country on railway container block trains, helping power homes, support spring planting, and keep industries running.
Along this “steel artery” of the economy, COSCO SHIPPING Development’s Shanghai Universal has partnered with China Railway Container Transport to advance the R&D and optimization of containerized equipment. With professional, high-performance container solutions, they provide critical support for China’s energy supply and agricultural production.
To date, the two parties have evaluated 10 research projects, filed 7 invention patents and 41 utility model patents, and published 9 technical manuals. They have also successfully developed and tested 17 products and technologies. Key achievements include rust treatment for open-top container interiors, the installation of fixed coil steel brackets in open-top containers, and innovations in automobile containers, coil steel pallets, and lightweight tarpaulins—marking significant progress in container equipment R&D.
Currently, two flagship products are playing a pivotal role. First is the 20-foot soft open-top container, the "Energy Guardian" safeguarding countless households.
✅ With a maximum load capacity of 32.2 tons, it utilizes high-strength steel and specialized anti-corrosion coatings to adapt to diverse climate conditions across regions.
✅ Compliant with CSC international safety standards, enabling multimodal transport by sea, rail, and road for seamless connectivity between mining areas, power plants, and ports;
✅ The soft top opens quickly, allowing loaders to operate from above and eliminating the need to tip the container, significantly improving loading efficiency.
✅ The flexible soft top can handle both bulk cargo and unitized goods, helping reduce empty return trips and lowering overall transportation costs.
✅ Designed for easy functional modifications, it can be equipped with fixed coil supports to achieve a "steel coil outbound, bulk cargo inbound" circular utilization model.
During the Spring Festival, thousands of power plants nationwide operate around the clock. A single ton of coal can generate thousands of kilowatt-hours of electricity, and one coal-filled train can power an entire city. Transporting 100 open-top containers per day moves nearly 3,000 tons of coal—the equivalent of over a hundred heavy trucks. This eases road traffic and lowers carbon emissions, truly putting the concept of “green transportation” into action.
The second flagship product is the 20-foot HC top-opening container, known as the “Harvest Guardian”.
✅ Internal height of 2.66 meters provides extra capacity, with a stacking strength of 140 tons, ideal for multi-tier storage and long-distance transport.
✅ Multiple sealed manholes on the container roof allow for material loading and sampling, meeting the closed-operation requirements of industries such as grain, chemicals, and metallurgy.
✅ Equipped with standard corner casting interfaces, making it compatible with railway and port lifting equipment and enabling seamless “one-container-to-destination” transport.
✅ Top-loading design improves loading and unloading efficiency while reducing damage from vertical packing.
✅ Also capable of carrying both bulk and unitized cargo, improving container utilization and reducing operating costs.
The Spring Festival also marks a critical period for spring plowing preparations, as fertilizer plants stock up on raw materials to ensure uninterrupted agricultural supply. With its enclosed design, versatility, and efficiency, this container is becoming a key solution for continuous logistics operations during the Spring Festival, particularly in “North-to-South Grain Transportation” and related industries.
The Spring Festival travel season is not just a temporary migration of people—it also reflects the ongoing pulse of the nation’s economic activity.
Shanghai Universal, a leading player in logistics equipment manufacturing, has worked closely with CRCT to turn joint research achievements into reliable, efficient, and eco-friendly container solutions. By providing intelligent and dependable equipment, they support high-performance logistics operations across the country.
